PROJECT NAME

PLUTO

Numerical code for plasma astrophysics simulations

SHORT DESCRIPTION

PLUTO is a joint project between Università degli Studi di Torino, Osservatorio Astrofisico di Torino and CINECA. It is a code for the numerical solution of systems of partial differential equations of mixed hyperbolic/parabolic type, for the simulation of astrophysical plasmas in the magnetohydrodynamic approximation, both newtonian and special relativistic. The code makes use of numerical schemes that represent the state of the art, it has optimal performances on high performance computing systems, it is publicly available and it is one of the most widely used by the astrophysical community.

ROLE

Collaboration to the development of new algorithms and numerical schemes
Development and maintenance of the Adaptive Mesh Refinment (AMR) module
Collaboration to the porting of the code to the new hybrid architectures for high performance computing, that make use of Graphical Processing Units (GPU)
Scientific guidance to the code development
Astrophysical applications

TIMELINE

The project started in 2007. The current developments are:
Porting of the the code to the new hybrid architectures for high performance computing, that make use of Graphical Processing Units (GPU)
Development of hybrid particle-fluid modules for the description of high energy astrophysical plasmas.
