Solar Orbiter ranked as the first space project and the 17th among the 50 most influential world projects of 2020, according to the Project Management Institute (PMI) list.
The ESA/NASA Solar Orbiter mission, launched in February 2020, will capture the first high-resolution images of the Sun and its polar regions, approaching it up to one third of the Sun-Earth distance.
Among its instrumentation, Solar Orbiter is carrying Metis, the visible-light and UV coronagraph developed in an international collaboration led by the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF) and supported by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), involving several Universities in Italy and research institutes in the world.
Despite the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions that followed, Metis has been successfully tested and calibrated, providing us with the very first images of the Sun’s corona in the UV.
