A qualitative illustration showing beamed auroral emission on the scallop-shell star J0508-21, assuming that the star has a multipolar stellar magnetic field and the radio emission is triggered by a possible magnetic interaction with an approximately corotating, evaporating planet that is potentially also responsible for causing dips in the star's optical light curves, Kaur et al. 2024b

Abstract

The militarization of public scientific research is radically transforming the academic and research landscape.

The current geopolitical phase requires a huge push in the development of advanced technologies and artificial intelligence, and requires that the best talents focus on applied military research.
Functional to this objective are the subtraction of resources from basic research and the worsening of the conditions and job prospects of precarious workers in universities and research institutions compared to those working in fields linked to the military industry.

The competitive method for the allocation of research funds, increasingly tied to industrial needs, penalizes free research and creates a vicious circle in which universities and public institutions become tools of private military companies, threatening the autonomy of science and its role in society.
